Santa Maria-a-Velha Church

This is where the Santa Maria-a-Velha Church stood, also known as the Church or Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vitória. It was built at the end of the 14th century or beginning of the 15th century, and some historians claim that the old temple was there before the monastery was built. It would have had an important role in the Batalha community. For several years, it was used as a place of prayer for the Dominican monks and as the centre of religious assistance for the local population. It was demolished in the 1960s, as part of the Batalha Urban Development Plan undertaken by the New State regime.
